Film Song Review: Katrina Kaif in Chikni Chameli

I suppose this post goes out ot all the Bollyland lovers out there. I recently watched the new Agneepath (2012) film starring Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra. It’s a remake of the 1990 film by the same name starring Amitabh Bachchan.

A famous song has been taking its rounds in every music and television channel – the item number Chikni Chameli starring Katrina Kaif as singing and dancing Chameli. It was sung by Shreya Ghoshal. Watch the full youtube video, which has over 13 million views already, below…

The list of actresses who could probably have pulled off the role of Chameli (excluding Priyanka Chopra of course) while still looking like a part of the film as a whole would include (but not be limited to): Rakhi Sawant, Mallika Sherawat, Isha Koppikar, Deepal Shaw, Mumaith Khan, Genelia D’Souza, Kangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy, Neetu Chandra, and possibly even Chitrangada Singh or Shahana Goswami. The list is quite extensive, however, how Katrina Kaif fit into this category is unknown to me. Besides the fact that Katrina has been in some mega-famous item numbers recently (like Sheila Ki Jawani) and is a top tier actress at the moment, which were probably the main reasons for wanting her to do this song, I found her presence in this song where she is surrounded by sooty and sweaty dark-skinned ‘slaves’ under the cruel rule of the evil Sanjay Dutt was kinda unpleasant and uncomfortable to watch. Like where is her tan she should be having if she’s slaving away all day in this place? Even if she were a prostitute, she wouldn’t be this cheery or carefree… I’m not sure if it was just the make-up or wardrobe, but Katrina’s role didn’t look convincing on screen.

Mind you I don’t think it’s Katrina Kaif’s fault, and I admire her as an actress and even enjoy many of her item numbers. Just got weird jeebies when I watched this one in the theatre and had to dissect and share my reservations…
